A Massachusetts police department is warning the public of a new scam that has already left victims.

The Barnstable Police Department have announced that victims are being contacted by their “Santander Bank Fraud Department” via a text message.

The message stated there was suspicious activity on an account. The victim called the number and was advised of the account that was compromised. The victim was then instructed to place the debit cards in the mailbox and a currier would come by and pick it up and deliver it to the corporate office. The victim was advised that new cards could be picked up later in the week at a branch office. The victim was also asked if they wanted to keep their PIN number to write VOID on the back of the debit card with the PIN number. The victim did as the “fraud department” personnel advised. Shortly after the cards were picked up from the mailbox, multiple ATM cash withdrawals were made at local Santander Bank ATM’s and at Bank of America ATM’s.

BPD advises the public to not put their cards in a mailbox to be picked up.
