Governor Healey urges Massachusetts businesses to apply for tariff refunds, calls on President Trump to cut checks for households

BOSTON – Today, Governor Maura Healey is encouraging Massachusetts businesses to apply for refunds from the federal government if they were charged for President Trump’s tariffs that were determined to be illegal. The Supreme Court struck down the tariffs earlier this year. Governor Healey is also renewing her call for the Trump Administration to refund every Massachusetts household $1,745 for the costs they’ve faced due to the tariffs. 

“President Trump’s illegal tariffs have increased costs for every Massachusetts business and resident. It’s important some that refunds are now available, and I encourage eligible businesses to apply. But this isn’t enough,” said Governor Healey. “The people of Massachusetts have faced more expensive groceries, household goods, construction materials and more because of these tariffs. The Trump Administration must also issue refunds to American households – and the President needs to actually focus on making life more affordable and abandon his costly tariff plans for good.” 

Businesses can now submit claims through an online federal portal to recover costs paid under the policy.  

In March, Healey formally called on the U.S. Department of the Treasury to provide direct refunds to households, estimating that Massachusetts families paid an average of $1,745 as a result of the tariffs, totaling nearly $4.9 billion statewide. She has also urged the federal government to rescind ongoing tariff policies that continue to drive up costs and to ensure that both businesses and consumers are made whole.
