NEW BEDFORD, MA – The SouthCoast Community Foundation recently awarded 71 local students with college scholarships totaling more than $668,000. The Foundation received over 1,600 applications from throughout the South Coast, making it the most competitive year for scholarships the Foundation has ever seen, with just 6% of applicants receiving scholarships. They also awarded their largest multi-year scholarship ever, the BankFive President’s Scholarship for $40,000.

“Education is one of our three strategic priorities at the Community Foundation. We believe that to improve the quality of life on the South Coast, education must be a central focus of our work, including giving young people the financial ability to attend college. In providing many scholarships, we feel that we not only help an individual, but in the long run, we help to lift our entire region,” said Gail Fortes, SouthCoast Community Foundation Board Chair.

Among the dozens of recipients, Jamiah Andrade Fernandes, a senior at New Bedford High School, received a $35,000 scholarship from the Jacobs Family Scholarship Fund. He plans to study computer science at UMass Dartmouth. His school advisor wrote, “Jamiah came to this country only a few short years ago, learned English, got accepted to the National Honor Society, and maintains enviable grades. Jamiah will be someone that will not squander the opportunity of education.”
