New Bedford man held without bail as 60-year-old victim of fatal shooting being remembered

A New Bedford man arraigned on a murder charge Tuesday has been held without bail.

38-year-old Christopher Smith is accused of fatally shooting his mother’s former partner, 60-year-old Ronald Sinclair of New Bedford.

Officers responded to the area of Austin Street near County Street at about 2:30 p.m. on April 29 for a report of a male gunshot victim.

Sinclair was rushed to the hospital for treatment. On Friday, May 3rd the victim succumbed to his injuries and died.

Smith was initially arrested shortly after the shooting in the backyard of a home on Chestnut Street.

Smith pled not guilty on Tuesday.

Sinclair was being remembered as a veteran who served our country, was loyal, and loved his friends and family.

Assistant District Attorney Charlie Schofield is prosecuting the case.

Smith’s next scheduled court appearance is June 17th for a probable cause hearing.

    So sad a life gone to soon my thoughts n prayers go out to the family
    . I just wish people k ow when u aim a gun at someone n pull the trigger u can’t take that back you will live with it for the rest of your life musserable in prison I pray for theses youth now a days they r quick to grab a gun n shoot it but then comes reality you will probably never hug your mom again if you have kids you will never kiss your kids again.
