The state Department of Public Health has increased the current risk levels for West Nile virus in several local communities.

In Massachusetts, 289 mosquitos have tested positive for West Nile virus since June 12, 2017. Two people have tested positive, including one in Bristol County.

The state Department of Public Health recommend taking these steps to protect yourself from illness:

Using insect repellents
Wearing long-sleeved clothing
Scheduling outdoor activities to avoid the hours around dawn and dusk
Repairing damaged window screens
Removing standing water from the areas around your home
