Two Fall River men were arrested on various charges Thursday after police broke up a group of people at a scenic spot in the city after hours.

According to Sergeant Moses Pereira, detectives assigned to the Vice Intelligence and Gang Unit were performing surveillance in the area of the Alfred J. Lima Quequechan Rail Trail in response to a recent uptick in individuals trespassing on the Rail Trail after the posted closing time of 9:00 p.m.

At approximately 11:00 p.m., detectives observed a group of approximately six to eight individuals congregating on the Rail Trail in violation of the posted hours for public use. As detectives approached the group they began to scatter in different directions. Detective Paul McGuire and Officer Scott Stavens were able to make contact with 29-year-old Eric Jones, of Fall River. Prior to his interaction with officers, Jones attempted to conceal his face and kept his hands inserted into the kangaroo pouch of his sweatshirt. During a pat-frisk, officers discovered that Jones was in possession of a loaded Glock 43 handgun.

Jones was placed under arrest and charged with multiple offenses to include Trespass, Carrying a loaded firearm without a license to carry, possession of a large capacity firearm and park regulation violation.

29-year-old Aaron McDermott, also of Fall River, was also arrested on outstanding warrants for possession to distribute a class A drug, possession of a class B drug, Trespass, Breaking and Entering, and vandalism.
