Saga between owner of Lizzie Borden House and owner of Miss Lizzie’s coffee shop takes interesting turn

The saga between the owner of the Lizzie Borden House, Lance Zaal, and the owner of Miss Lizzie’s coffee shop, Joseph Pereira, has taken an interesting turn.

On Thursday afternoon, the PR firm representing Zaal sent Fall River Reporter an update on relations between the two entities.

“The owner of the Lizzie Borden House and the owners of Miss Lizzie’s coffee shop have cordially resolved the use of the Lizzie Borden name. The owner of Miss Lizzie’s coffee shop has agreed to change the name. A new name has yet to be determined.”

Reporter then contacted Pereira about the reported name change and he stated that nothing is changing as of now.

“We’ve met and he seemed amicable. However, no name change, nor business was ever discussed. We agreed to possibly work together, but that was all. I have no knowledge of any press release, nor have I made any agreement with him.”

In August, Reporter contacted a representative for Zaal about the Miss Lizzie’s Coffee shop that opened next door to the Borden House on Second Street on August 4th. It was asked if he was part of the ownership of Miss Lizzie’s and had any details on the new spot.

“Miss Lizzie’s Coffee” violates our intellectual property and has created a false association and confusion with the house and its operation. We are taking appropriate action to correct this and defend our marks. We have also been selling Lizzie Borden Coffee in the gift shop and plan to provide coffee options to our guests directly.”

We will keep you updated.
