Nationally known Jimmy Buffet tribute band among activities coming to Fall River

Here are some highlights of midsummer happenings at the Fall River Public Library. In addition to the kids’ summer reading program, they have exciting programs for adults and teens.

Thursday, July 13:

Drums Alive!, 11 am: This musical, participatory event is fun for all ages! Drums Alive joins the dynamic movements of aerobic dance with the pulsating rhythms of the drum.

Shaving Cream Art for Teens, 5 pm. Teens & tweens 12-18 are invited to create their own unique marbled artwork using shaving cream and paint. It’s free and no signup is required!

Friday, July 14:

Cactus Head Puppets, 11 am. The Cactus Head Puppets present the tale of “The Bremen Town Musicians” using both rod and shadow puppets. This free program is supported in part by a grant from the Fall River Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Board Game Afternoon: 1 pm—2 pm. Every Friday this summer play some fun board games! Beat the heat (and some library staff members) in Munchkin, Machi Koro, Oni Tama, and more (you can even bring your own)! Program geared toward ages 12-19.

Monday, July 17:

Changes in Latitudes Concert, 6 pm, Heritage State Park.

The Fall River Public Library will host a free outdoor summer concert featuring Changes In Latitudes, the country’s premier Jimmy Buffett tribute band on Monday, July 17 at 6:00 p.m. at Heritage State Park at Battleship Cove. The concert is free to all and is generously sponsored by Debbie and Richard Danner.

This nationally acclaimed tribute band roams the country bringing conga lines and “Top Rock” fun to every venue they play. It’s the ultimate beach party for everyone that’s good, clean fun for all ages! Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops and enjoy a summer evening of fun and music on the beautiful Fall River waterfront.

The evening will include games, a free summer raffle, and other surprises! Food trucks including Green Jar Cocina, Big Dog Eats and What’s Up Cupcake will be available on site. In the event of rain, the concert will be held on Tuesday, July 18 at 6:00 p.m.

Please note that this event is NOT held on the library grounds, but at Heritage State Park. Please head to the park to enjoy the show. For further information, contact the Fall River Public Library at 508-324-2700 or visit fallriverlibrary.org.

Monday, July 17:

Dragons! Art Exhibit, July 17 – August 25, Children’s level display cases. Featuring sculpture by local artist/children’s librarian David Mello.

Signup begins today for Children’s Sock Gnome Craft (event scheduled for July 28 at 11 am).

Tuesday, July 18:

Storytime Under the Tent, 11 am. Under the tent on the Elm Street lawn for stories, songs, crafts, and other fun. In case of rain, the storytime will be held indoors.

Middle Grade Book Club, 5 pm. Kids age 8-12 are invited to join us to talk about books! This month, the library is reading The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson. To sign up, call the Children’s Room at 508-324-2700, ext. 4.

Wednesday, July 19:

Flying Dragon Craft, 11 am. Make a dragon puppet with flapping wings! For children up to age 12.

Books & Tea Club, 2 pm. Book lovers unite! Join for light refreshments as members meet to discuss books they’ve enjoyed reading lately. Recommended for adults.

Magic: the Gathering, 5 pm. Teens age 12-18 are invited for a weekly meetup to play the world’s most popular trading card game! New players are always welcome.

Thursday, July 20:

Make a Balloon Dragon, 11 am. Ed the Wizard guides kids through balloon twisting techniques to sculpt a winged balloon dragon. Registration is required and begins July 14. Fantasy & Sci-Fi Book Club, 6 pm. Readers who love science fiction and fantasy are invited to the book club, which meets on the third Thursday of the month. This month’s selection is The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix.

Friday, June 21:

Princess Ice Cream Social, 1 pm. Children are invited to make their own sundaes and meet some of their favorite fairytale characters, including Snow White, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast! Kids are welcome to attend dressed in prince/princess or fairytale costumes!
