A man has been arrested after reportedly being chased on Massachusetts and Rhode Island highways.

According to Police Chief John Carmichael Jr, at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Newton officers were dispatched to the Riverside MBTA Station parking lot for an unconscious male inside a red Mercedes.

Prior to arrival, dispatch informed officers that the car in question had been pursued earlier in the evening by Rhode Island officers as it traveled into Massachusetts on I-95.

Massachusetts State Police continued the pursuit as it traveled northbound on I-95.

Due to the operation of the vehicle, and excessive speeds, the vehicle exited the highway in Norwood, at which time the pursuit was terminated.

Newton officers discovered the vehicle in the MBTA lot and Officers Acuna, Baia and Sullivan attempted to contain the vehicle before approaching the suspect.

Despite their efforts, the suspect, 22-year-old Emanuel Salmeron of Providence, was able to escape containment and attempted to flee the lot.

Officers were able to keep the suspect contained in the MBTA lot preventing another pursuit.

Officers Acuna, Sullivan, Baia, McSweeney, Murphy, Pelegrini and Sgt’s McLean & Healy prevented the suspect vehicle from leaving the lot, and potentially creating a hazardous situation on the roadways.

Officers were able to corner Salmeron in the lot and during containment, he traveled to an access road where Officer Kayla Donahue and Captain Dennis Dowling followed the car behind several buildings and around the perimeter of the grounds. After a brief pursuit inside the lot, Salmeron abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot to the MBTA tracks.

Officer Donahue and Captain Dowling engaged in a foot pursuit with Salmeron and following a brief chase, they were able to get him cornered between a fence along the Woodland Apartments and MBTA tracks.

As Salmeron surrendered, Officer Donahue jumped down a five-foot retaining wall, through thick under brush and assisted Captain Dowling in successfully taking him into custody without further incident.

Salmeron was charged with Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Operating Motor Vehicle Negligently, two counts of Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon (driving vehicle at Officers), and Resisting Arrest.

Salmeron was turned over to Massachusetts State Police.
