UPDATE: Local man, needing new kidney to survive, perseveres
UPDATE: We have great news to report. Dave Soares is at Mass General right now he got a kidney from the donor list on Sunday afternoon.
Despite having stage 5 kidney failure, Dave Soares continues to persevere and live his life to the fullest including playing with his band “On Tap RI” whenever he gets the chance. Despite his spirit, however, he can no longer work full time due to his condition. Along with his family and friends, he is looking for someone out there to save his life.
Dave who is 39 and a graduate from Diman Voke, grew up in Swansea and currently lives in Tiverton. By all accounts, Dave is one of the kindest, funniest people you’d ever hope to meet. He often keeps friends and family laughing and rocking.
Dave’s life was surprisingly turned upside down in August 2014 when he was admitted twice to the hospital and suddenly diagnosed with stage 5 kidney failure. He has been on dialysis since September 2014 and attends three times a week. He is hoping to find a person with 2 healthy kidneys that can donate one directly to him. Dave has been approved and gone through the process of being put on the kidney donor list. He is ready for surgery for a donation from the “list” or from a person that wants to donate to him.
Dave is not only holding out hope for a new kidney, but his treatment itself is very expensive and the bills are adding up. Where he is not lacking though is support from family and friends. He has a great group of friends that are helping to try to find a donor by putting informational stickers on their cars. Currently, he has twelve in Rhode Island and Connecticut bringing awareness with the stickers. He also has a supportive wife Serena who runs the Facebook page “Help Dave Soares Get a Kidney” to bring awareness, and maybe a donor.
A site has been created to help Dave with the financial burden of possible transplant related expenses. Featured on the Help Hope Live site is an upcoming fundraiser. A Quarter Auction at The Liberal Club has been scheduled for Sunday March 11 at 1 p.m. All are welcome. Tickets can be purchased online or at the event. Donations to the raffle would be gladly accepted. 15 vendors are currently scheduled.
If someone is interested in donating their kidney, they can call Mass General at 617-643-7193.
