Legal action looming after Massachusetts boy has to change shirt for second time

Published

on

It appears that legal action is coming after a Massachusetts boy was asked to change his shirt for a second time after school officials say its content was causing an issue with classmates.

The Middleborough School District is doubling down after middle school student Liam Morrison was sent home after wearing a shirt that says, ‘There Are Only Two Genders”.

When Liam was sent home from school earlier this year for wearing the shirt, Massachusetts Family Institute sent a demand letter informing the district that it had denied Liam’s constitutional right to free speech and that legal action was coming if it happened again.

Liam wore a similar shirt, shown in the photo above, to school on Friday and school officials made him change it.

Last month, the 12-year-old went in front of the School Committee to express that he felt it was unfair for him to not be allowed to wear the shirt.

“I never thought the shirt I wore to school would lead me to speak to you today. That Tuesday morning, I was pulled out of gym class by two adults for a very uncomfortable talk. They said that people were complaining about the words on my shirt, and that my shirt was making some students feel unsafe. They told me I wasn’t in trouble, but it sure felt like I was. I was told that I need to remove my shirt before I could return to class. When I nicely told them I didn’t want to do that, they called my father.

“Thankfully, my dad supported my decisions, and came to pick me up. What did my shirt say? Five simple words… “There are only two genders.” Nothing harmful, nothing threatening, just a statement I believed to be a fact. I have been told that my shirt was targeting a protected class. Who is this protected class? Are their feelings more important than my rights? I don’t complain when I see pride flags and diversity posters hung throughout the school. Do you know why? Because they have a right to their beliefs just like I do.

“Not one person, staff or student, told me that they were bothered by my shirt. Actually, just the opposite. Several kids told me that they supported my actions and that they wanted one too. I was told my shirt was a disruption to learning. No one got up and stormed out of class, no one burst into tears. I experience disruptions to my learning every day. Kids acting out in class, yet nothing is done. Why do the rules apply to one and not the other? I feel like these adults were telling me that it wasn’t okay to have an opposing view.

“I didn’t go to school that day to cause arguments or hurt feelings, just to share my view. I learned a lot from this experience. I learned that other students share my view and that adults don’t always do the right thing or make the right decisions. I know that I have a right to wear that shirt with those five words. Even at 12-years-old, I have my own opinions, and I have a right to express those opinions at school. This right is called the First Amendment to the Constitution.”

The story has gone viral and has stretched across the world reaching as far as New Zealand leaving many to pick sides.

What legal action will be taken by the Institute remains to be seen.

How about if all the other students wore a t-shirt saying
“Liam Morrison is a vicious little s***.”
    How’d he like it?

False equivocation. One is a statement of fact without targeting a specific person and the other is statement of opinion.

No, it’s not a fact. You could actually read science journals that describe in great depth how transgenderism is 100% real, but you’d rather live in fear of known truth and find comfort in garbage like this. Funny how I, a heterosexual male, feels zero fear of accepting the known science behind human genetics and development from inception, but you cower in fear. I’m 109% more intelligent than you, and a better human being. And yes, this kid wore this shirt to hurt other innocent people.

Yes, you are right, it is real. It’s a mental health condition. And don’t even try to argue. Look at the DSM-5 manual by the American Psychiatric Association. And instead of trying to treat the mentally ill, we are promoting and pushing this suffering on otherwise normal, healthy kids. This brave young man’s freedom of speech is worth more than some disgruntled radical progressive teacher’s warped worldview.

My guess is he’s smart enough to know they have a constitutional right to their opinion and would ignore them. The school might take issue with the fact that his name is on it making it a personal attack and the word s***. What does seem vicious is your reaction. One can support people’s right to live their life as they choose while still believing in the scientific reality that there are two genders. You can change how you present yourself to the world but you can’t change your chromosomes. I support any male who chooses to become a transwoman. I do oppose those who choose to invalidate my biology to make themselves feel better about their choice. Biological sex is not a choice. How one chooses to live in their body is.

The parents are using this kid to fight their own battles with the world outside their heads. I don’t agree with everything the trans culture promotes but I don’t feel its my right to insult people who suffer from gender dysphoria.

This kid’s parents do and they also think its ok to use their kid as a tool and distract him from his learning and engaging with his peers. Instead, he’s now a pariah, the school has to use tax payer funds to defend this idiocy and all that’s spread around is a lot of hatred and zero understanding.

Good job, another score for the narrow-minded hateful right that will use anyone to have a chance to stomp on others.

Let it go, if a kid wears a dress no one is hurt. If there are ‘no gender’ bathrooms were the gender confused can go without bothering other’s sensitivies, then fine, do it.

The fact is that no one wants to think very hard about this issue as it questions the very core of patriarchy and social authoritarians want everyone to stay in their assigns roles and follow their rule.

So it’s not ok for him to wear that shirt….yet we all have to be ok with boys going to school dressed like girls or vice versa and have to carefully remember to use their preferred pronouns as they believe they are something else. For this reason, that boy had EVERY right to wear that shirt and I would absolutely have backed him up.

Don’t play dumb. You and I know a shirt that would say “The sky is blue” isn’t offensive. We have wackjobs that have the same beliefs like you that shoot up gay night clubs. The kid is allowed an opinion and allowed to express that opinion regardless of who likes it or not. For now, this is still the United States of America, where FREEDOM OF THOUGHT should be thriving. So it’s okay to wear a shirt that promotes hate and homophobia? Noticed how the same people that complain about homosexuality saying it’s “always being shoved in their faces” are the first to throw their hateful beliefs at everyone else’s. What’s next? People will think it’s okay to wear a shirt that has a swastika on it and claim it’s not to offend people?? Conservatives need to live and let others live without spewing their hate. If that life really has no effect on yours, then why be so bothered by it? Nobody is being forced to be gay. You already know by preteen years on what you are into sexually. I know I did. I didn’t need any outside influences to force me to know what I wanted.

As a registerd in Massachussettes and a card carrying member of the ACLU. I would support, though not agree with content,Liam’s right to wear that tee shirt. If the Middleborogh School district wishes to avoid these issues. They should eliminate the problem of expression through by adopting a “dress code”as other districts in Massachusettes have. Plain polos of a plain solid color,Khakis and plain solid color sweat shirts. I do question how this 12 yo came to form these sophisticated ideas however.

Maybe the child, yes child he’s only 12, has been listening to all this hoopla and wanted to voice his opinion on the subject. Crazy thing is, our constitution gives him the right to do so.

For thousands of years there have been people who choose to present themselves to the world differently than the biological sex they were born with. Becoming a transgender woman is a choice. I support their right to that choice. But they don’t get to invalidate my biology to make themselves more valid. Don’t reduce me to a ‘birthing person’ or a ‘breeder’ or a uterus. I have two X chromosomes I am a woman. You can’t eradicate actual biology with mental and emotional choices. If you choose to become a transgender woman, strut it, love your choice, but you will never be what I am, a biological woman.

Get over yourself u hypersensitive pack of p****** . Enough with the transgender nonsense. Transgender people are just looking for attention because they are so boring and pathetic. And yup like the shirt says there are only 2 genders males and females. Now there is scientific evidence that says there are more than 2 genders. Wrong again a*******. There are no laws that say that I have to care or take your feelings or your sensitive feelings into account when I express myself and my opinions. Personally I don’t care at all about people who are sensitive or cannot figure out what gender they are.your a pathetic loser if you can’t figure out your gender.

I probably am more in agreement with this kid’s politics and reasoning than I’m against it.

That being said, when parents use their children to forward their own far left/right political agendas it sickens me.

There used to be a couple kids at Buttonwood Park Zoo that were forced to hold anti-zoo posters all the time. I’ve seen parents force children to attend drag queen story hours, etc.

This poor kid is being manipulated by the parents and in the process he’s going to be ostricized at school and probably for the rest of his school years. For what? So the dad and step-mom can voice their over the top political views?. Expressing concern about parental manipulation.

This, to me, isn’t about right/left it’s about letting kids be kids. Leave the propaganda out of the classroom and let kids be kids.

He has a right to his opinion, but he looses his freedom of speech rights as soon as he enters the school. There have been Supreme Court cases about this. If the adults in the school determine that the child’s clothes are disruptive to others, then legally they can have him change his clothes or flip it inside out. My kids can’t wear clothes that promote alcohol. I have no issue with that. Would you be ok if the kid’s shirt said something antisemitic? It’s really not much different in this situation no matter your beliefs. Youth go to school and loose their rights. They are not adults yet and that’s how it works. He is there to learn, not protest.

I am a teacher and I can say with 100% confidence that this child is being used by his parents to express their beliefs. If anyone believes that he wrote that speech on his own, think again. In fact, I would have actually liked to see what he would have written on his views (without coaxing). Let the child write on his own, in his own words, and I can assure you that he does not have the perception that is obviously the parents’ own. By the way, who bought the shirt for him? Does a 12-year-old kid even care to wear a shirt with such a message emblazoned on the front? I have worked with kids this age for over 25 years. They don’t want to wear shirts with political statements; they like to wear clothing that depicts their favorite music artists, sports, art, tees they buy when on vacation, etc., etc. The parents need to leave THEIR politics at home and not use their own kid as an advertisement and a prop. Shame on the parents. You’re adults; you should know better.

“At the school board meeting the twelve year old boy read the statement his father had written for him regarding the shirt his father made him wear. The goal of forcing the Mansfield School Department to waste money to promote the father’s private agenda was achieved.”

If someone wore a shirt to school reading “Jesus is Not Divine” or “Guns Kill Children,” I’m guessing Dad would take serious issue with it. After all, nobody asked the kid’s opinion on Christianity or gun control… or gender identity.
