East Providence suspect held without bail, after seriously injured man found stabbed at Cumberland Farms

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – A man is seriously injured, and another arrested after a local stabbing.

According to police, on Friday, at 7:00 p.m., the East Providence Police Department received two emergency calls regarding an assault with a knife. One call came from the location of the incident on Crescent Ave. in the Riverside section of the city. The second came from the parking lot of the Cumberland Farms store at the corner of Pawtucket Ave. and Wampanoag Trail. 

Officers located the victim of the stabbing in the Cumberland Farms parking lot. The victim had sustained numerous stab wounds and was bleeding profusely. Officers, later joined by the East Providence Fire Department, began treating the victim for his injuries. The victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he currently remains in serious, but stable condition. 

The investigation continued at the location of the incident. It was determined the suspect, identified as 25-year-old North Providence resident Valdini Correia, entered the residence without permission, and immediately began stabbing the male victim without provocation. Correia then fled the area. The investigation has revealed this incident was due to a domestic situation involving an ex-girlfriend. Approximately one hour later, Correia was arrested by the North Providence Police Department without incident. East Providence Police then took custody of him.

Correia has been charged with Domestic Burglary, Assault With Intent to Commit a Felony, Assault With a Deadly Weapon in a Dwelling, Weapons Other Than Firearms Prohibited, and Domestic Disorderly Conduct 

Correia was arraigned by a bail commissioner at the East Providence Police Department and was held without bail.
