All Four Fall River, Somerset State Reps Vote Against Giving Homeless Veterans Preference For Housing in Massachusetts
All four Somerset and Fall River State Reps, Alan Silvia, Carole Fiala, Patricia Haddad, and Paul Schmid, voted against an amendment that would give homeless veterans preference for housing over others to include non-US citizen migrants. Served your country and paid taxes? You don’t get any benefit over someone who paid no taxes and traveled through 5 countries and dozens of states breaking immigration laws to get to Massachusetts.
On Friday, Massachusetts Democrats shut down several Republican amendments that would have prioritized Massachusetts residents over newly arrived migrants. The vote was on party lines with the vast majority of Democrats voting against it and all Republicans voting for it.
For 10+ years all four Fall River area State Reps have blocked bills giving veterans preference over people who have entered the country illegally. In 2013, Rep. Diehl offered an amendment “requiring veterans be given priority over illegal immigrants for public housing.” Alan Silvia, Carole Fiala, Patricia Haddad, and Paul Schmid all voted against the amendment even getting a vote on the floor. I haven’t had a chance to review all their votes between 2013 and 2024, but we have at least two examples of them voting against amendments like this.
We asked our 52,000 members in our Fall River group if veterans should have priority in housing, and 99% of them stated yes. 1,205 people voted, 1,185 answered yes, 20 voted no. In a 2023 interview, Alan Silvia stated that he didn’t remember his 2013 vote but would vote to give veterans preference if the vote came up again (29:30 minute mark). He went against that promise and voted to kill the amendment. In that same interview, Alan Silvia admitted that Democrats punish you by pulling the best committee seats if you don’t vote the way the Democrat leadership wants you to.
Both Schmid and Silvia are veterans yet both consistently vote against giving veterans preference for housing. Alan Silvia was unavailable for comment.

I am sorry but voters get what they ask for. Veterans should always be first it is time for a change. I know how I vote. To think this is actually real is really just loosing hope in everyone you think is going to do the right thing for your State and then Country. We would never be the land of the free without all the men and woman who sacrifice their life day and day out for us to live our life. Just for them to have more political influence or political power is just a damn shame . My brother went in the army as a young man and came home a retired Sgt. who suffers with PTSD depression and lost all of his hearing in one ear from being blown up and they are say Veterans do not matter. Well shame on anyone that thinks that these men and woman who sacrificed for our Country does not matter . So let me get this straight…. And please correct me if I’m wrong…A party in the American armed service risked there life fighting for our freedom so I can wake up and go to work everyday and spend quality time with my family and friends (our veterans gave me that blessing) and they were denied priority over housing due to immigrants entering united states illegally and but yet have more rights then our vets??? WTF HAPPENED???? Don’t get me wrong I’m sure you can find housing for well needed immigrant family’s but NOT at the cost of out vets!! THis simply isn’t right.
