Critically endangered shark found deceased on beach in Little Compton

A shark was located deceased at a local beach over the weekend.

According to the Atlantic Shark Institute, Peter Tirpaeck discovered the deceased Sand Tiger shark on Tappen’s Beach in Little Compton, RI.

Tirpaeck reached out to the Mystic Aquarium who immediately notified ASI of the shark.

Sand Tiger sharks are critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with a decreasing population, and each one is really important for researchers to gain information from.

The shark is now in a freezer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and will get a complete necropsy from the Apex Predator Lab in Narragansett, RI.

The shark was retrieved in darkness before the tide could take it back.

    Hopefully they will find out cause of death.
