Those who knew 18-year-old Jean Charles say he was more than the circumstances surrounding his death.
Charles, of Brockton, was struck and killed at approximately 6:15 a.m. Tuesday morning while crossing Route 44 near 430 New State Highway in Raynham. He had been on his way to get breakfast at Dunkin’, a regular part of his morning routine, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser started by one of his managers at Chipotle.
Charles was described as someone who always seemed to have a smile on his face, with a kind heart and a great sense of humor that made people laugh. He was hardworking and willing to help others. He chose Chipotle, in part, because he liked cooking.
Outside of work, he was studying computer science and had a serious interest in art, technology, and design. He built his own website and had already completed more than 12 live projects, creating websites, mobile apps, and designs for businesses.
“Jean was so much more than the tragic circumstances of his passing. He was a young man with a bright smile, a kind heart, a great sense of humor, and a future he was actively working toward.”
The fundraiser is to help Jean’s family with funeral and memorial expenses and other unexpected costs.
