A man is dead after an incident at a Massachusetts pond over the weekend.
According to the police and fire departments, on Sunday at approximately 6:00 p.m., the Oxford Police Department received a 911 emergency call from a resident of 60 Park Street. The caller reported that a man emerged from the woods adjacent to his home which abuts Lowes Pond looking for help. The man stated that he and his friend were in a canoe fishing, it had overturned, and the friend didn’t make it out of the water.
Police, Fire, EMS, Rescue and Dive personnel responded from multiple agencies. Oxford Firefighters and Police Officers located a man in the water. Emergency personnel utilized their water safety equipment and another canoe to pull the man from the water and get him to shore where he was given immediate medical treatment.
The Massachusetts State Police Investigations unit was called to the scene to investigate with local authorities.
Both parties were transported to UMASS Memorial Hospital in Webster. The man who was recovered in the water was further transported to UMASS University Campus in Worcester where he was later pronounced deceased.
