According to Portsmouth Police, at approximately 1:10 p.m. this afternoon, Portsmouth Police received multiple calls from motorists that a vehicle, a 2014 Black Chevy Cruze, was operating erratically on East Main Rd, traveling north bound.
According to the calls received, the vehicle was first observed in Middletown where it nearly rear ended another vehicle and continued traveling north bound. At one point the vehicle was traveling in the south bound lanes while still operating north. Officers observed the vehicle and stopped it on East Main Rd near Lepes Rd. At that point the officers made contact with the operator identified as Rebecca E. Cottle, 32, of Tiverton. Officers also observed Cottle’s eight year old son who was a passenger in the vehicle.
According to the officers on scene, Cottle displayed obvious signs of intoxication, failed standardized field sobriety tests, and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Officers also observed several bottles of an alcoholic cider inside the vehicle. Cottle was taken back to police headquarters where she refused a breath test and was processed.
Cottle was charged with 2nd driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and or drugs, 2nd refusal of a breath test and driving while her license was suspended with enhanced penalties. The Department of Children, Youth and Family was contacted due to the child being inside the vehicle at the time of apprehension.
