Special patrol in honor of Swansea officer nets ten on impaired driving, other charges

The Rhode Island State Police today announced the arrest of ten motorists for impaired driving as part of an honor patrol last night.

Additional Troopers were on duty as part of an honor patrol remembering Lieutenant Robert Cabral, a Swansea, Massachusetts police officer who was killed by a drunk driver on November 5, 2005. Cabral was a member of the Swansea Police Department for more than twenty-six years and prided himself on guiding people to make good choices. Known as “Officer Bob” in Swansea, he coached soccer and Little League and volunteered for the D.A.R.E. program. At the time of his death, he was 52 and left behind two children, Mitchell and Alec.

The following motorists were arrested:

At 6:00 PM, Troopers arrested Danayzia Kenner, age 20 of 8 Veazie Street, Providence, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (blood results pending), possession of cocaine, driving on an expired permit, and an active 3rd District Court warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of shoplifting. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 10 in Cranston.

At 7:00 PM, Troopers arrested Brian Byrne, age 54 of 22 Riverdell Drive, Saunderstown, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. unknown) and chemical test refusal. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle crash on Route 295 in Johnston.

At 7:54 PM, Troopers arrested Anibal Cunha, age 62, of 149 Bishop Hill Road, Johnston, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and or drugs (B.A.C. – .128, .130). The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 6 in Providence.

At 8:36 PM, Troopers arrested Frank Miele, age 64, of 11 Coriander Lane, North Kingstown, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. unknown) and chemical test refusal. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle crash on Memorial Boulevard in Providence.

At 9:00 PM, Trooper arrested Charissa N. Russell, age 32, of 20 Monterey Road, Warwick, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. unknown) and chemical test refusal. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 95 in Providence.

At 10:36 PM, Troopers arrested Edson M Chamorro, age 26, of 37 Moorefield Street Providence, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. – .169, .159) and driving with a suspended license. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick.

At 11:35 PM, Troopers arrested Eduardo Berdugo, age 21, of 115 Hughes Avenue, Apartment #1, Pawtucket, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. unknown) and chemical test refusal. The arrest was a result of a motor vehicle crash on Route 6 in Providence.

At 11:54 PM, Troopers arrested Francis Ciaramello, age 33, of 210 Bellman Avenue, Warwick, RI, for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. unknown) and chemical test refusal. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 4 in East Greenwich.

At 1:00 AM, Troopers arrested Jorge Martinez, age 44, of 692 Pine Street, Apartment #2, Central Falls, RI, for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. unknown), driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs with a child under 13 in the vehicle, and chemical test refusal. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 95 in Providence.

At 2:25 AM, Troopers arrested Katelyn Cardoso, age 27, of 303 High Street Apartment #2, Cumberland, RI for driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (B.A.C. unknown) and chemical test refusal. The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Atwells Avenue in Providence.

“Last night we had extra Troopers working in the memory of victims of drunk driving, particularly Lieutenant Cabral,” said Colonel James M. Manni, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety. “I’m proud of the work our Troopers do every day to keep our roadways safe and especially appreciative of their efforts to apprehend motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We’re sending a clear message that impaired driving will not be tolerated.”

There are more than 30 victim honor patrols taking place in Rhode Island until January 1, 2021, in conjunction with the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through a partnership with MADD RI, local police departments, and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s Office on Highway Safety. The purpose of the campaign is to deter drunk driving while honoring those who have died or been injured by a drunk driver.
