A 55-year-old Somerset man who died Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle on Wilbur Avenue is being remembered.

According to Gregg Miliote of the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Somerset Police received a 911 call from the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night as he was walking in the roadway near the intersection of Brayton Avenue.

A preliminary investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office and Somerset Police revealed that the driver of a Chevy Silverado was travelling westbound on Wilbur Avenue through the intersection with Brayton Point Road when he struck Matthew Martinville in the roadway.

The 49-year-old Swansea man immediately stopped his truck, attempted to assist the victim, and called 911 to report the incident. Martinville was rushed to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Miliote stated that the driver cooperated with police and was interviewed by police Wednesday night.

A cousin of Martinville stated that he was loved by many.

“He had the biggest heart in the world & had a billion brothers & sisters that loved him!”

Friends also described him as a sweet man and a great carpenter that didn’t have a mean bone in his body. An overall nice guy.

The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing. No criminal charges have been filed.

Services have yet to be announced.

Please correct — The terrible fatality in Somerset Wednesday night was at the corner of Wilbur Ave and Brayton Point Rd. Brayton Ave is a completely different street.

I remember he was always at the old TK’s in Somerset. I wish someone would have given him a ride home. This time of year, it’s not safe to walk in the dusk or dark.

Prayers to Matt’s brother and the driver who hit him. It sounds like a tragedy all the way around. It’s so dark over there my guess is he didn’t see him in the road.

Be careful and say safe everyone.
