Silver City Galleria in Taunton soon getting demolished

A former popular mall will soon be no more.

According to WJAR 10, the Silver City Galleria building in Taunton is expected to be demolished in mid-February.

Speculation had been taking place across social media concerning the possible tearing down of the property that has been around for almost 30 years.

It is currently unclear what will become of the location, however, Thibeault Development is in the process of securing a permit to remove the building.

Fall River Reporter contacted William Thibeault, principal owner, concerning possible plans concerning the property and have yet to hear back as of this writing.

Thibeault Development, through its singularly owned entity Silver City Holdings WT LLC, completed their acquisition of the Silver City Galleria on May 17, 2019. Thibeault Development was the winning bid of $7.5 million at auction for the 1,100,000 ft.² center on 137 acres.

At the completion of the closing, William Thibeault stated at the time that he was “extremely excited about this opportunity. Rarely do you find a significant piece of land centrally of this size, located 40 minutes from Providence, Rhode Island and Boston, Massachusetts with built-in infrastructure and flexible zoning. Truly one-of-a-kind. The mall will continue to operate with its current management company, JLL, and I look forward to discussing our redevelopment plans in the near future.”

An investor has stated that it was too expensive to keep the mall open due to lack of open stores.

Tenants had been gradually leaving the mall the last several years. Some leaving on their own and some saying that they were asked to leave when leases were about to end which left the mall practically empty.

Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell stated that she is looking to get economic development, jobs, and revenue from the site.
