A Massachusetts teen is being remembered, and his services have been announced, after a fiery highway crash.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, last week, first responders were dispatched to Interstate 91 northbound at the 32.2-mile marker in Whately following a report of a single-vehicle crash.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle was traveling northbound on Interstate 91 when it left the roadway, entered the median, and struck a concrete bridge pillar. The vehicle subsequently caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.
The operator, 18-year-old Edward “Neddy” Kelly, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
According to an obituary, “Neddy won awards for his skills in Latin, karate and poetry. During the Covid years he taught himself to repair electronics and loved learning software. Although he faced severe mental health challenges in his teens, he completed two years at Falmouth Academy and two years at Sturgis Charter Public School East in Hyannis.”
“Ned transferred to Boston where he felt at home in the multicultural setting and the bustle of Boston. He graduated from high school early and entered Westfield State University where he studied computer science.”
A memorial service for Ned will be held at 11:00 a.m. on November 28 at Corpus Christi Parish, 324 Quaker Meeting House Road, East Sandwich, MA 02537. A gathering will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) https://www.nami.org / or the charity of your choice. Your positive thoughts and prayers for Ned are also deeply appreciated.
The crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Deerfield Fire Department also responded and assisted at the scene.
