Scott-Pacheco, responds to Correia’s announcement

Erica Scott-Pacheco, former candidate for Mayor of Fall River, reacted to the news that Jasiel Correia has suspended his mayoral campaign and taken a leave of absence with pay.

“Today, Jasiel Correia heard the clear call for an end to his controversial tenure as Mayor of Fall River. I encourage him to outright resign and not draw a taxpayer-funded salary during this leave of absence.

It is shameful that Correia did not announce his intentions in time to be removed from the ballot. I will not replace him on the general election ballot. Per our City Charter, the deadline for changes was September 23. Correia’s announcement today is another bizarre, self-serving move to deprive the voters of two legitimate candidates for Mayor on November 5.

I am humbled by the hundreds of voters encouraging me to run a write in campaign in light of Correia suspending his campaign. Voters are always able to write me in. However, I will not actively run a write in campaign just three weeks before the election. I remain appreciative of the voters who believe in my message to restore respect and justice to our City Hall, and I hope that Correia taking a leave of absence is one step toward our shared goal.”

Scott-Pacheco, 35, a community activist and resident of the Flint neighborhood of Fall River, narrowly lost to Correia in the preliminary election and did not advance to the general election.
