Rhode Island State Police arrest two on drug and gun charges

Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, announces that an investigation by members of the Rhode Island State Police High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force and the Woonsocket Police Department has resulted in the arrests of two Woonsocket residents on narcotics and weapons charges. A handgun was also seized.

As a result of this investigation and after conducting court-authorized search warrants at 84 Arlington St. and 38 Blackstone St. in Woonsocket, members of the HIDTA Task Force and Woonsocket Police earlier today arrested:

Juan Navarro, age 26, of 84 Arlington St., Woonsocket, and Zackary Bruneault, age 21, of 38 Blackstone St., Woonsocket

The following items were seized from during searches of their residences:

· 314 grams cocaine
· 41 grams “crack” cocaine
· One Smith and Wesson 9 mm handgun
· 10 Xanax pills
· $3,728.00 in United States currency

Navarro and Bruneault were both arrested and charged with:

· Deliver/possession with intent to deliver & manufacture a Schedule II controlled substance – cocaine / “crack” cocaine
· Deliver/possession with intent to deliver & manufacture a Schedule IV controlled substance (Xanax)
· Possession of cocaine – one (1) ounce to one (1) kilo
· Possession of firearm while committing a controlled substance violation
· Controlled substance conspiracy
· Distribution in or near a school zone

Navarro also was charged with violating the terms of his probation from a prior conviction in Providence County Superior Court in 2011, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying a pistol without a license in a case brought by the Woonsocket Police Department. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with 18 months to serve in that case.

The HIDTA Task Force is managed by the Rhode Island State Police and comprised of members from Pawtucket Police, West Warwick Police, Lincoln Police, Middletown Police, Providence Police, North Providence Police, Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI), United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the United States Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
