Police departments in Massachusetts continue to deal with political sign theft/vandalism as suspect sets signs on fire at residence
Communities throughout Massachusetts continue to deal with issues regarding political signs. This incident may be the worst one yet and has caused a politician to respond.
According to police, on Thursday, just after 10:00 p.m., the Sterling Police Department was dispatched jointly with the Sterling Fire Department for a report of political signs on fire on a front lawn.
Upon arrival, officers confirmed several political signs had, in fact, been set on fire. The area was checked, and no suspects or evidence was located. Additionally, no other reports of vandalism were taken by the Sterling Dispatch Center.
Someone who stated they were the victim took to social media.
“A few of our election signs were burned last night. A neighbor was coming home, saw the fire and called 911. Two police cruisers and a fire truck came quickly so the fire didn’t have a chance to spread. Considering all the dry leaves and twigs on the ground, we’re all fortunate this didn’t turn into a much larger fire. There are no hydrants as our part of town is above the town water system. There is no question these signs were intentionally set on fire: Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congressman Jim McGovern, Vice president Kamala Harris. It was just a few signs, easily replaced. The point is clear the signs are about free speech. This act shows a lack of respect for other’s opinions as well as other’s properties. We feel threatened, wouldn’t you? This is how it starts. Fascism is alive in Sterling, Massachusetts.”
When Congressman Jim McGovern was made aware of the incident, he also issued a statement on social media.
“Last night in Sterling, a pro Trump arsonist lit on fire a supporters’ yard signs for Harris-Walz, Elizabeth Warren & me. There is no place for this type of intimidation in American politics, full stop. But this is only going to make us work harder. When we work hard – we win!”
Residents in Fall River, Westport, and Dartmouth have also stated that their political signs were damaged our stolen recently. Signs from both sides of the aisle.
