A Friday crash has claimed the life of a Massachusetts man.

According to Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Troopers assigned to State Police-Holden responded to reports of a crash involving two vehicles on Route 290 eastbound at 495 northbound in Marlborough. The crash resulted in fatal injuries to the operator of one vehicle; the operator of the second vehicle involved was not injured.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a 2007 Toyota Yaris, operated by a 53-year-old man from Lawrence, was traveling eastbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle failed to slow for decelerating traffic in the left lane merging onto 495 northbound. The Toyota struck the rear of a 2019 Nissan Armada.

Marlborough Fire had to extract the operator of the Toyota who was entrapped. The operator of the Toyota suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported by medical helicopter to UMass-Lakeside, where he was pronounced deceased.

The operator of the Nissan, a 38-year-old man from Willington, Conn., and his passengers were uninjured.

The crash resulted in the closure of the eastbound travel lanes with only the breakdown lane being open for traffic for approximately three and a half hours.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Troopers were assisted on scene by Marlborough and Northborough Fire and EMS.
