One woman has died, and four others were taken to the hospital after a head-on collision on a Rhode Island highway.

According to police, on Monday, Cumberland Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the area of 3191 Mendon Road (Route 122) for the report of a motor vehicle collision with injuries.

Upon arrival, officers observed the results of an apparent head-on collision and determined the operator of the vehicle that entered the opposing lane of travel suffered a severe medical episode that contributed to the crash. A 67-year-old female passenger in that vehicle sustained a significant injury during the collision and tragically died hours later at the hospital.

The operator of this vehicle, and the passengers in the other vehicle, two adults and two children, were all transported to area hospitals with reported minor injuries. The name of the deceased victim is being withheld pending notification to her next of kin.

Chief Benson thanked the mutual aid assistance of the Lincoln, Woonsocket and Wrentham emergency medical and fire services. The Chief also offered thoughts and prayers for those recovering from this crash and deepest sympathies to family and friends of the woman who ultimately died as a result of the accident.

“This is truly an unfortunate chain of events that ended in tragedy. We certainly hope the operator who had the medical episode receives the care and assistance he needs and all others involved recover quickly.”
