Ohio man killed, four others injured, after three-vehicle crash on Massachusetts highway

An Ohio man has been killed and four others injured in a multi-vehicle crash this morning.

According to Massachusetts State Police, just before 7:30 a.m., Troopers from the State Police-Charlton Barracks, along with Auburn Fire and EMS, responded to a three-vehicle crash on Route 90 east in Auburn.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2013 Mazda VST operated by a 23-year-old male from Columbus, Ohio, was traveling on the three-lane highway eastbound in Auburn. The Mazda VST sideswiped a 2020 Mazda CX5 operated by a 60-year-old man from Sturbridge, forcing it through the guardrail and down the embankment. The Mazda VST then rear-ended a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by a 41-year-old woman from Rhode Island.

The Mazda VST operator was transported to UMass Memorial Hospital-Lakeside where he succumbed to his injuries. The three passengers in the vehicle were also transported to UMass Memorial-Lakeside with minor injuries. The Mazda CX5 operator was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital. The Jeep Operator was uninjured.

The right and middle lane were closed for approximately three hours.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
