Massachusetts may be on back end of holiday COVID-19 surge as hospitalizations, positive rate continue decline

Massachusetts saw an increase in active cases in Sunday’s COVID-19 report, however, some statistics are continuing in a positive direction.

Massachusetts has seen 4,283 more positive cases announced today. A decrease from Friday’s report. The 7 day weighted average positive test rate saw another decrease to 5.86% which is the lowest the rate has been since the beginning of December. The rate was 3.3 on November 23rd.

Massachusetts had seen 5,657 more positive cases announced yesterday.

The Massachusetts Department of Health statistics show a rise in total confirmed cases to 448,311 with 69 more reported dead (67 confirmed, 2 probable) for a total of 13,652 (13,372 confirmed, 280 probable).

The overall amount of tests administered in Massachusetts is now 12,348,663 after 89,177 new molecular tests.

The 7 day average of COVID-19 deaths is currently 66.

Estimated active cases increased to 98,476.

Hospitalizations have increased in 87 of the last 125 days and 62 of the last 84, but saw another recent decrease, this one by 32, to see the total lower to 2,165. This is the third straight day of decreases in hospitalizations, the fourth in five days, and 10 out of the last 12 days.

Weekly COVID-19 Public Health Report

According to the January 14th report, Fall River has a 153.6 Average Daily Incident Rate per 100,000 (Last 14 days) (112.5 last week) which is 7th in the state. New Bedford saw an increase to 134.3 (was 97.9). Westport is also in the red at 96.4 (was 67.4), Swansea is at 109.3 and was 77.5 last week. Somerset also saw an increase as they sit at 104.9 (was 80.6). Freetown increased to 112.1 from 82.9. Dartmouth is currently at 113.2 after seeing 88.2 last week.

Massachusetts Officials have now also issued a “vaccine doses administered and shipped” report updated on January 14th.

As of January 17th, according to the CDC, the United States has seen 23,653,919 cases of COVID-19 with 394,495 reported deaths.
