A Rhode Island man is dead after injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on Monday evening.

According to police, the Cranston Police responded to a 9-1-1 call just after 6:00 p.m. concerning a motorcycle crash in the area of 372 Wellington Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers located the operator of the motorcycle identified as 39-year-old Alexander Pena of Providence, RI. Pena was located between a guardrail and a chain-link fence along Route 95 northbound. He suffered fatal injuries where he was pronounced deceased by Cranston rescue personnel.

Pena was operating a 2011 Suzuki GSXR 750 travelling south on Wellington Avenue from the Providence line with a friend who was also operating a motorcycle. Pena accelerated at a high rate of speed where he lost control in the area of 372 Wellington Avenue where there is a slight bend in the roadway. He struck the curb on the west side of Wellington Avenue and was thrown from the motorcycle where he came to rest between the guardrail and a chain link fence bordering Route 95 north. Pena was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Cranston PD issued a reminder to motorcycle riders.

“As a reminder to all operators of any type of motorcycle as the spring and summer season approaches, extreme caution should be exercised along with the proper safety equipment to prevent injuries. The roads are always bearing the remnants of the winter road treatments including sand and other debris, so it is equally important to maintain proper speeds and obey all traffic laws.”

The crash remains under investigation.
