A Massachusetts man is facing several charges after an arrest in Rhode Island.

According to Rhode Island State Police, at approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning, the Peabody, Massachusetts Police Department contacted the Rhode Island State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks to advise that a subject wanted by their department, identified as Jamaine Johnson, age 41, of Boston, may be heading towards Rhode Island with an infant in the vehicle.

According to the Peabody Police Department, Johnson was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute, where he assaulted his girlfriend by strangulation, stole her vehicle, and abducted their six-month-old child. Johnson purportedly made threatening statements, indicating potential harm to himself and the infant if confronted by law enforcement.

An investigation led authorities to believe Johnson may be in the vicinity of Routes 95 and 195 in Providence, Rhode Island.

At approximately 3:20 a.m., Troopers located Johnson’s vehicle on Melissa Street in Providence. Upon approach, Johnson attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a brief struggle, during which he resisted arrest and assaulted a Trooper.

The six-month-old infant was found unharmed but unsecured on the front seat of the vehicle. Providence Rescue transported the infant to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for evaluation.

Johnson was taken into custody and later arraigned at Sixth District Court on the charges of Assault on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing a Police Officer, and Fugitive From Justice Warrant issued by the Peabody Police Department for Domestic – Assault and Battery, Domestic – Strangulation, Kidnapping, Threats to Commit Murder, and Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.
