Massachusetts Senator Rodrigues secures $1 million Senate funding allocation for Fall River’s Central Fire Station
Fall River, MA – Senator Michael Rodrigues, Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, has announced that he has secured $1 million for asbestos abatement and environmental remediation for the aging Central Fire Station on Bedford Street in Fall River. While the allocation is primarily targeted for the Central Fire Station, the appropriation has the flexibility to be expended on any of the 6 fire stations in Fall River.
The historic station, over 90 years old, has been beset by structural issues, long term disrepair, and pervasive asbestos. Despite ongoing repairs, it has been plagued by severe maintenance needs, including leaking skylights, inoperable windows, and basement sewage leaks. Known as “The Big House”, the building was built in 1931 and is considered a critical albeit struggling historical landmark, with a functioning brass pole and air raid siren still in use today.
“I’ve worked hard over the years to deliver for my district, and public safety has always been a top priority of mine,” said State Senator Michael J. Rodrigues, Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. “Working in close collaboration with Mayor Coogan, Chief Bacon, and Union President O’Reagan, they have made it clear the Central Fire Station was in dire need of a significant environmental remediation. I’m delighted to have secured this funding and look forward to a cleaner and safer environment for our firefighters at the Central Fire Station.”
“I want to thank Senator Rodrigues for securing this vital funding that will assist the City of Fall River in our abatement and remediation efforts at our Central Fire Station and other stations throughout the city. The removal of all environmental hazards from these older structures is a priority and will ensure the health and safety of our public safety personnel,” said Mayor Paul Coogan.
“This funding is a big step forward for us. The Center Station has a lot of history, but it also comes with real challenges that impact the health and safety of our firefighters. We appreciate Senator Rodrigues’ support and the collaboration with the mayor and our union. This investment helps us take care of our people while and serve the residents of Fall River,” said Chief Jeffrey Bacon.
“Simply put, the impact of Michael Rodrigues cannot be overstated. Senator Rodrigues’ tireless dedication over the years has been instrumental in securing critical grant funding that made the restoration and improvement of Center Station possible. Senator Rodrigues has been more than an advocate—he has been a driving force, working relentlessly on our behalf both locally and on Beacon Hill. There is no doubt that his advocacy has helped save lives, and we are deeply grateful for everything he has done and continues to do,” said Union President Mike O’Reagan.
The Senate passage of the Environmental Bond Bill, also known as the “Mass Ready Act,” now moves onto the House of Representatives for its consideration, and then to the Governor for her signature.
