A southeastern Massachusetts mom is remembering her 6-year-old son after he tragically passed away this past weekend.

According to Fire Chief George E. Deering IV, Police Chief Scott MacDonald, and State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey, the Orleans Fire Department responded to a call for smoke and fire in a residence at 177 Route 6A at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday night. On arrival, firefighters observed smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the 2 1/2-story building.

Firefighters learned at the scene that one person was unaccounted for. Chief Deering ordered a second alarm, drawing mutual aid from surrounding communities, and firefighters immediately made entry to conduct a search. They located one seriously injured person, who was transported to an area hospital. That person later succumbed to their injuries.

Shantal Thomas revealed in a GoFundMe fundraiser that her son, Kyi Odeen Bourne, is the 6-year-old boy who died due to the fire.

“Kyi was 6 years old and autistic. He attended the Harwich elementary School in Massachusetts. His favorite color is red and his favorite cartoon was SpongeBob square pants and boss baby.”

The fundraiser has raised nearly $40,000 as of this writing which Shantal hopes will help to pay for funeral expenses, food, clothing, and shelter.

“Thanks in advance to y’all..prayers for my family to get through these difficult times.”

Four other occupants were transported from the scene for medical care. One Orleans police officer was evaluated and released.

Local and state officials have determined that the fire was accidental.
