Massachusetts Department of Youth Services staff member allegedly killed by juvenile resident
A Massachusetts Department of Youth Services staff member has died after a reported attack.
On Wednesday, June 30, 2021, officers from the Springfield Police Department responded to a call from the Department of Youth Services on Tinkham Road in Springfield reporting a staff member having been assaulted by a juvenile resident.
When the victim was discovered after the assault, medical staff at the facility began providing aid, while staff called 911. Paramedics arrived and the victim was transported to Baystate Medical Center for life saving medical treatment.
The victim, who tragically passed away several weeks later, has been identified as James Hillman, 60, of Springfield.
The alleged suspect, a 16-year-old male, remains in DYS custody at a secure facility. His identity is currently being withheld pursuant to laws relating to the identification of juveniles, and while charges are pending.
This is an on-going homicide investigation being conducted by the Massachusetts State Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder and Juvenile Units.
