Heat wave to hit the South Coast on Wednesday; heat advisory in effect

Published

on

Compared to last year, the SouthCoast has had a mild summer. Beginning Wednesday, we will get a reminder that there are almost 2 months left in the season with a heatwave that will last for 3 days. A heat advisory is in effect from 11:00am to 8:00pm on Wednesday.

Temperatures will be in the 90s Wednesday through Friday with “feels like” temperatures between 98-104 degrees. The peak will be on Thursday with 96-degree temperatures. We’ll get a reprieve this weekend as temperatures drop back to normal summer temperatures in the 80s.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:

In extremely high temperatures, heat-related illnesses are always a concern and one should be aware of the symptoms of both heat stroke and heat exhaustion. It goes without saying that strenuous activities such as mowing the lawn should be avoided.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heatstroke is an emergency! Call 911.
