A Providence man has been sentenced to prison for killing his child’s mother.
On January, 15, 2019, Rachael Rene was brutally stabbed to death by Luis Matta while their 8-month-old son was in the home.
According to the Providence Journal, Matta was sentenced in Superior Court to 30 years, with 17 to serve, for manslaughter. The remainder of the sentence will be suspended with probation. Matta was acquitted of first-degree and second-degree domestic murder.
According to family, the day before Rene’s life was taken, she was awarded sole custody of their eight-month-old son.
Matta was arrested after walking into the Providence Police Department and admitting to the killing. He brought the baby to his parent’s home beforehand.
Before Rene’s death, EastBay RI reported that Matta turned himself in on a warrant after a woman identified only as a “victim” reached out to Warren police stating that Matta had violated a protective order she had earlier filed against him.
Rene’s was well-known in the community as a successful hairdresser before giving birth to her son which family members stated was the greatest joy of her life.

He needs to stay locked up what is wrong he killed the mother of his baby so why should he should be out at all so he can do it to some other woman
Another failed protection from someone that reached out. How sad is it that this child is growing up without parents. How sad that someone lost their life over this monster.
Shouldn’t people who murder get a lifetime sentence he got off easy. You can be executed in countries for much much less. Very sad. Sentencing dosent match the crime!
If you read the article it said he wasn’t convicted of murder. He was convicted of manslaughter, a lesser charge, which carries a lesser sentence. Should always read an article before posting!
Don’t be so rude, saying ‘read the article’. They are reading the article, but the point is he got manslaughter for murder that is way less than he should’ve gotten. He stabbed her to death! Goes to show you the legal system is not protecting.
Manslaughter?! 17 years?! How are there drug dealers locked up for 20+ years but this guy brutally stabs his kids mother WITH THEIR CHILD PRESENT and gets a deal like this?? He must have given them something pretty juicy in return…this is disgusting…anyone that had part in allowing this man to receive such a light sentence is disgusting but I bet you they sleep just fine at night…my heart goes out to this woman’s family…I would be LIVID if she were mine…this isn’t justice…this is b*******!!
