Despite rescue attempt by off-duty firefighter, 30-year-old man dies falling from Massachusetts bridge

A man has died after falling from a bridge in Massachusetts.

According to Shrewsbury Police, at approximately 3:49 p.m. Tuesday, Shrewsbury and Worcester Police received reports of a man in the water of Lake Quinsigamond near Belmont Street.

Shrewsbury Police dispatched a patrol boat and officers towards the area of the Burns Bridge (Route 9).

Upon arrival it was determined that one male jumped or fell from the bridge.

The reporting party was off duty Shrewsbury firefighter Robert Ljunggren, who was on a boat in the lake. Firefighter Ljunggren witnessed the man fall into the water, and dove into the water in attempts to locate and rescue the victim, however he could not locate him under the water.

Shrewsbury boat officers Kyle Amato and Shawn Valliere assisted Worcester Fire Department’s dive team, who recovered the male victim from the water. The victim was taken aboard the Shrewsbury Police boat and given CPR while the Shrewsbury officers took him ashore to awaiting paramedics.

The 30-year-old victim was transported to UMass where he was pronounced deceased.

The Worcester Police Department is handling the investigation.

The joint rescue effort included resources and personnel from the Shrewsbury Police Department, Shrewsbury Fire Department, Worcester Police Department, Worcester Fire Department, and Worcester EMS.
