Brockton man wanted in fatal shooting of Stephanie Beatty found with self-inflicted gunshot wound

BROCKTON – Massachusetts State Police and Brockton Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting after a suspect was found shot.

According to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz, at approximately 12:22 a.m. Friday, Brockton Police received a 911 call for a report of a shooting outside 17 Nason Street. Upon arrival at the address, police located a female victim inside a parked motor vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot. The victim was pronounced dead on scene. She has been identified as 22-year-old Stephanie Beatty of Norwich, Connecticut.

Brockton Police contacted Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and began the investigation. As a result, detectives sought and obtained an arrest warrant for 29-year-old Gelson Fernandes of Brockton, charging him with Homicide.

Friday evening, Fernandes was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a Boston hospital where he remains for treatment.

Friends of Beatty have vowed that they will get her justice.

Cruz stated that the victim and Fernandes were previously acquainted.
