For those who were there, today’s sad announcement of Jimmy Buffett’s passing makes his surprise performance in July in Rhode Island that much more special.

It was announced earlier this morning on social media that the 76-year-old Buffett passed away peacefully last night surrounded by his family, friends, and dogs.

“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

Buffett checked into a Massachusetts hospital in May and had to postpone a May 20th show in Charleston that never ended up taking place due to an undisclosed issue that needed immediate attention. He stated at the time:

“Hello my faithful fans in Charleston and beyond. These few words from Mark Twain about life changes, seemed perfect to pass on at this time. “Challenges,” he said, “make life interesting, however overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” I had a sudden change of plans this week that affected us all. Two days ago, I was just back from a trip to the Bahamas, thawing out from the California “winter tour,” and chomping at the bit to get to Charleston. I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention. Growing old is not for sissies, I promise you. I also will promise you, that when I am well enough to perform, that is what I’ll be doing in the land of She-Crab soup. You all make my life more meaningful and fulfilled than I would have ever imagined as a toe headed little boy sitting on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts, your amazing years of loyalty, and just remember, “NOT YET!” Love to all JB”

His last public performance that we can find was a special appearance in Portsmouth, RI at Sunset Cove on July 2nd leaving just about everyone surprised, including the Portsmouth Police Department.

“What a great surprise! Jimmy Buffett made a special appearance at Sunset Cove and was kind enough to take a photo with the Portsmouth Police RI.”

A concert featuring Mac McAnally from the Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band took place on that Sunday with the audience getting the special surprise of Buffett joining McAnally on stage.

Buffett’s last performance with his band was on May 6 at the Snapdragon Theater in San Diego, CA and has a new album scheduled for release later this year.

A cause of death was not released.
