Third active-duty Massachusetts firefighter dies within a week
Sadly, another Massachusetts firefighter has passed away.
Boston Firefighters Local 718 regretfully announced on Sunday the active duty death of Fire Lieutenant Joseph Hurley. Assigned to the HQ Officer Pool after promotion from Ladder 24.
Hurley passed away unexpectedly on December 26, 2024.
According to an obituary, Hurley “served in the US Army. After his service, Joe followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, John, a veteran of the Boston Fire Department, and father, a retired Somerville Fire Chief, and joined the Boston Fire Department himself. Joe served for numerous years and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. His life was devoted to serving his country, city, and everyone around him due to his selfless and generous nature.”
Hurley is the third active-duty Massachusetts firefighter to die in a week.
A Brockton firefighter also suffered a line of duty death.
Visiting hours will be held for Hurley on Monday, December 30th, from 4:00pm-8:00pm at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home 2055 Centre St. Boston, Massachusetts. The Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, December 31st at 10:00am at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church 2078 Centre St. Boston, Massachusetts. The burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Scituate, Massachusetts. After, there will be a reception to celebrate Joe’s life.
