Fairhaven, New Bedford, Mattapoisett fire departments respond to blaze that destroys boat, cause released

Officials have released the cause of a blaze that destroyed a local boat.

At 6:69 a.m. on Thursday, the Fairhaven Fire Department received a call for a reported fishing vessel fire at 4 Washington St., formally known as Blue Harvest Fisheries. Engine 2, Engine 4, and Ladder 1 initially responded.

Upon arrival, heavy fire was coming from the pilot house on the 82 ft. fishing vessel. Fire suppression on the F/V Carrabassett began initially with water and then changed to environmentally compatible foam. Personnel operated for approximately one hour before the fire was considered under control. It was determined that welders were in the bow of the fishing vessel utilizing a cutting torch and attempted to use a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire.

Mutual aid companies from New Bedford and Mattapoisett fire departments responded to the scene, and Acushnet Fire provided station coverage.

The fishing vessel’s owner was present and stated that the vessel had recently been retired from service. Mitigation of environmental issues in the harbor was managed by the Fairhaven Harbor Master, MA DEP, and USCG.

No injuries are being reported at this time.

The boat is a total loss.
