Fall River Fire Department extinguishes blaze that caused heavy damage to two-story home

The Fall River Fire Department battled flames at a residential building Friday night and into the early morning hours.

According to Chief Roger St. Martin, just before 11:15 p.m., crews were dispatched to 87 Read Street for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, heavy fire conditions were found to the rear of the single-family, wood frame, 2-story structure.

Firefighters knocked the exterior fire down quickly. Crews then made an attack from the side entrance to the 2nd floor where the fire extended into the attic space as well as the rear bedroom. Crews then conducted overhaul and salvage operations.

The structure was vacant as it was currently being renovated and near completion. A for sale sign could be seen on the property.

A search revealed no occupants were in the home at the time of the blaze.

The fire was brought under control at 11:30 p.m. and declared extinguished at 12:15 a.m.

The damage to the home was estimated at $150,000.

The fire was determined to have started outside and extended to the vinyl siding and into the attic. The fire cause is still under investigation with assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s office.
