Southern Massachusetts officer credited with saving life of 6-month-old infant
A local police officer is being credited with saving the life of a young child.
According to police, on Sunday, August 13, Officer Eric Mitchell was dispatched along with Plymouth Fire and EMS to an address in North Plymouth for a choking infant. This infant had been delivered prematurely and was only 28 weeks old.
Officer Mitchell arrived in less than two minutes from the original Dispatch. He found the infant unresponsive, and not breathing. He noticed a mucous like substance in the baby’s mouth, put it facedown over his arm, initiated back blows to expel more of the substance, and then cleared the baby’s mouth.
The Plymouth Police Professional Standards Division investigated Officer Mitchell’s actions and were told by a Brewster EMS Supervisor that the “run sheet” listed the Paramedics activity as responding to a “life threatening event of an infant.”
An interview with Paramedics who responded yielded the following quote:
“If the Police did not intervene as they did, it would have been a tragic outcome for the premature child.”
The Plymouth Police Department Command Staff publicly commends Officer Eric Mitchell for his quick response, and decisive action which saved this infant’s life.
