Taunton man dead, Berkeley woman injured, after crash on Route 495
A man is dead and a woman injured after a serious crash Thursday night.
According to Dave Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police, at 11:25 p.m., Troopers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Rt 495 north at Exit 50 in Milford.
Upon arrival, officers found a truck partially hanging off the edge of the bridge over Route 16 below.
Preliminary investigation and crash reconstruction indicates that the Freightliner was northbound on Interstate 495 prior to Exit 50 in Milford when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered out of its lane. The truck struck the median guardrail and rode up and over it, coming to rest approximately halfway off the bridge over Route 16.
The male operator of the truck, a 24-year-old Taunton man, was transported to Milford Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. A passenger, a 20-year-old from Berkeley, was transported to Milford Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
The truck also leaked fuel onto the roadway.
The fuel was cleaned up and the truck was towed off of the bridge.
The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and Crime Scene Services units.
Both affected roads have fully reopened.
