Names released in fatal Sunday afternoon crash in Smithfield
A Sunday crash has killed one person and seriously injured another.
According to Smithfield Police, at approximately 1:34 p.m., Smithfield Police responded to a multi-vehicle collision on Putnam Pike in the area of Palmer Street.
While travelling westbound on Putnam Pike, Bruce Ferreira, 65, of Pascoag, RI, was operating a decommissioned, five-ton military vehicle, and struck the rear of another westbound vehicle operated by Rachel Ferreira, age 34, of Woodstock, CT. Ferreira’s vehicle then entered the oncoming travel lane, striking an eastbound vehicle.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle, John McKenzie, age 68, of Watertown, MA, succumbed to his injuries as a result of the crash. His passenger, Carol Riggenbach, age 70, also of Watertown, MA, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.
The collision remains under investigation.
