Fall River Police Department issues warning concerning scam that’s circulating

Also available in Português / Español / ខ្មែរ (Cambodian)

The Fall River Police Department is warning residents about a scam involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers, federal investigators, and bank fraud specialists.

Here’s how it works:

Scammers contact victims and claim that their money is “bad,” compromised, counterfeit, or connected to criminal activity.

They instruct victims to withdraw cash from their bank accounts or gather money from their homes, claiming it needs to be examined or secured as part of an investigation.

They then arrange for someone posing as a law enforcement officer, investigator, or courier to pick up the money.

FRPD wants the public to know that:

Police will NEVER call you and demand that you withdraw or surrender your money.

Law enforcement will NEVER send someone to your home to collect your savings for safekeeping or verification.

Do NOT provide personal financial information or follow instructions to keep these transactions secret.

These scammers can be extremely convincing. They may use official-sounding titles, spoof legitimate telephone numbers, and create a false sense of urgency to pressure victims into cooperating.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately! Do not withdraw money, arrange a pickup, or provide any financial information.

The Fall River Police Department asks to share this warning.

“Talk to your parents, grandparents, elderly neighbors, and loved ones. A simple conversation could prevent someone from losing their life savings.”

Remember: If someone tells you your money is “bad” and needs to be picked up by law enforcement, it’s a scam!
