A murder involving a Massachusetts animal advocate has left an animal organization in a difficult position.

According to MSPCA-Angell, last week, 84 cats were surrendered to the MSPCA-Angell after 49-year-old Andria Hanafin was found deceased in her Reading home. Members of our Law Enforcement and Community Outreach teams helped remove the cats from the residence. The cats were transported to their Adoption Centers in Boston and Methuen, where they are now receiving care.

Hanafin was part of the animal rescue community and had opened her home to foster cats in need.

Thre shelter’s immediate priority is ensuring all 84 cats receive the care they need. The cats have varying medical needs, and those requiring treatment will receive it before they are made available for adoption. Some may be ready for new homes as soon as this week, while others will need more time in our care.

“Taking in 84 cats at once places significant demands on our shelter teams and resources. We are grateful to the staff and volunteers across our adoption centers, community outreach, law enforcement, and community clinics who have been working tirelessly to support these cats through a tragic case.”

If you have been considering adopting a cat, MSPCA-Angell says now is a great time. Whether it’s a cat from this intake or just any cat currently in their care, adopting helps a great deal.

Donations also help them provide medical care, treatment, food, and daily care for these cats and for all of the animals in their care.
