A 23-year-old New Bedford man was sentenced Wednesday after being convicted by a jury last week of First-Degree Murder by Deliberate Premeditation and Firearms Offenses.

Court records show that John Geovanni Pires Monteiro Macedo was sentenced to life in prison in Fall River Superior Court with parole eligibility in 30 years. He was given credit for 1,091 days already served.

Monteiro Macedo is parole eligible because he was an emerging adult at the time that he committed first degree murder.

He was convicted of the August 3, 2023, homicide of 27-year-old Amarito Fernandes of New Bedford.

According to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, III, the evidence at trial proved that Monteiro Macedo approached a vehicle parked on County Street in New Bedford shortly after 11:00 p.m.  The victim was an occupant of the vehicle.  While Monteiro Macedo was at the vehicle, he produced a firearm and shot the victim several times as the victim attempted to flee.

The victim was brought by acquaintances to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Video surveillance provided critical evidence in the case.

Monteiro Macedo has also been indicted on murder and gun charges in connection with the death of New Bedford man in Plymouth in July of 2023.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Tara Burdman and Catherine Sauter.
