With the cost of school supplies and lunches up nearly 8% this year, unhoused families have been particularly hard hit.
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fall River recently eased that burden for the region’s most vulnerable families. The organization hosted a Back-to-School Party at its Family Shelter in Fall River, welcoming dozens of families to a cookout with games, face painting, and free backpacks and supplies for every child heading back to class.
“Events like our Back-to-School Party help ensure that children experiencing homelessness can begin the school year with confidence and excitement, while reminding parents that they are part of a caring community that wants to see them succeed,” said Susan Mazzarella, CEO of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fall River. “Every backpack, every school supply, and every smile shared that day sends a powerful message: they are not alone.”
The shelter also serves families by providing temporary housing along with supportive services and stabilization programming designed to help families move from crisis to permanent housing and long-term stability.
“Our Family Shelter is much more than a place to stay,” said Mazzarella. “It is a place where families can find safety, support, and hope as they work toward a brighter future.”
