Corporal killed on Interstate 95 attempting to assist a stranded motorist; remembered for thoughtfulness and courage

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the loss of Corporal Brett Martin.

Massachusetts State Police told Fall River Reporter that preliminary information indicates that shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Troopers from the Newbury Barracks responded to Interstate 95 southbound at Mile Marker 74 in Boxford for reports of a pedestrian struck. The pedestrian was transported to hospital by ambulance with life-threatening injuries.

MSP personnel from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), Crime Scene Services (CSSS) and SPDU Essex responded to investigate.

No other details were available.

According to The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, 51-year-old Corporal Martin was reportedly attempting to assist a stranded motorist when he was tragically struck and succumbed to his injuries.

“Corporal Martin began his career with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department as a correction officer in February of 2008. He worked in a number of different positions within the Suffolk County House of Correction and was most recently stationed at a security post in the Kitchen at the House of Correction.

“Corporal Martin was a dedicated, thoughtful and courageous member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, who exhibited a selflessness, care and concern for others that was evident to all who knew him. His legacy of bravery and self-sacrifice will endure among those with whom he served and among his colleagues throughout corrections and the law enforcement community.

“He will be greatly missed by all here within the Department, and we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends, and our collective support as they grieve this profound loss.”
