Authorities and medical professionals warn as TikTok challenge causing severe burns across the country
The Nassau County Fire Commission’s Office of the Fire Marshal has released a bulletin warning parents about a viral social media challenge involving NeeDoh gel-filled squishy toys that has already caused severe burns to a child in the county.
The trend, popular on TikTok, involves placing the toys in the microwave. Sometimes after previously freezing them. The gel inside quickly boils and can explode when removed, spraying scalding material and causing second- and third-degree burns to the hands, chest, and face.
“This is extremely dangerous and could lead to severe injury or death,” the bulletin states.
Multiple children around the world have already suffered serious burns from the challenge.
Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro emphasized that the toys are intended only for normal play as described on the label. Heating them in a microwave, oven, or on a stovetop is misuse and poses a significant risk, especially to children.
The bulletin urges parents and caregivers to closely monitor children in the kitchen and to discuss the dangers of imitating online trends.
Hospitals and authorities in other parts of the country have also expressed concern.
The key message from the Fire Marshal: “Let kids be kids, but let’s all work together to keep them safe!”
